It is a pleasure to be celebrating 10 years of the Cwtsh Community & Arts Centre this year. The Cwtsh team have been very supportive of my development as an artist hosting my solo exhibition Out of the Allotment in 2018.
Much has happened in the five years since and my artwork continues to evolve but I continue to be inspired by seasonal change which is integral to my sense of self and connection with the natural world.
The artworks on show can be collectively named Imagined & Remembered. They have been made in a spirit of playful adventure and are a response to my explorations of Wales and the Marches.
The palette of pink, green and yellow is influences by the new shoots of trees and flora of Spring. The dynamism of seasonal change is further expressed in the formal qualities of a simplified language of line, shape and space. I have enjoyed the directness of working with oil pastel which allows for a variety of mark-making and manipulation. Surface materials used include cardboard packaging and my own collaged papers from so-called ‘failed’ paintings-where there may be beauty in small detail even when the image does not work as a whole. This appeals to my sense of integrity and is reminiscent of the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi.
